Practical Guidelines
When it comes to capturing stunning portraits of your dog, timing is everything! Booking your session well in advance ensures you get the perfect date, ideal lighting conditions, and a stress-free experience. But how far ahead should you schedule? The answer depends on a few key factors, including the season, special occasions, and your dog’s comfort level.
If you’re aiming for a seasonal shoot—like the vibrant colors of fall, a snowy winter wonderland, or golden summer sunsets—booking at least two to three months in advance is highly recommended. These peak seasons fill up quickly, especially on weekends, as many pet owners want to take advantage of beautiful outdoor settings. Holiday-themed sessions, like Christmas or Valentine’s Day, should be planned even earlier to allow enough time for editing and printing before the big day.
For general portrait sessions, scheduling four to six weeks ahead is usually sufficient. This timeframe allows for flexibility in choosing the best day for you and your dog, ensuring there’s ample time for preparation. If your dog is nervous or requires extra time to adjust to new environments, booking even earlier can give you the opportunity to schedule a meet-and-greet or practice session beforehand.
However, some moments in a dog’s life can’t wait. If you’ve recently adopted a puppy, booking a session as soon as possible ensures you capture their tiny features before they grow—sometimes within just a few days. Puppies change at an incredible rate, and their playful, floppy-eared phase is fleeting. Scheduling a professional session early allows you to preserve these adorable moments before they disappear forever.
Similarly, end-of-life photo sessions often require urgent booking. If your beloved senior dog is in declining health, I understand that time is of the essence. I do my best to accommodate last-minute requests for these deeply meaningful sessions, ensuring you have a calm, loving experience with your dog. These portraits become treasured keepsakes, capturing the love and bond you’ve shared for a lifetime. If you find yourself in this situation, please reach out, and I will do everything I can to create a beautiful session for you and your pup.
