There are some evenings that remind you why you chose to photograph dogs in the first place. Wednesday evening at The Liberty Hotel in Boston was one of them.
I had the pleasure of joining Yourgi for their Yappier Hour at The Liberty, photographing dogs and their people against the beautiful backdrop of the Liberty Yard. And what started as an evening of dog-friendly drinks, conversation and portraits turned into something I find much more meaningful: a celebration of the relationships we have with our dogs.
A Dog Is Never Just “A Dog”

That’s where I come in. As a MA Dog Photographer, I don’t believe we’re simply photographing what a dog looks like. We’re photographing what that dog means.
A Lot Of Dogs. A Lot Of Stories.
Over the course of the evening, my assistant and I photographed dog after dog as they arrived with their people.
Big dogs. Tiny dogs. Young dogs. Old dogs. Dogs who apparently had never seen a camera before. And dogs who seemed to believe they had been waiting their entire lives for a portrait session.
There were goofy expressions, serious expressions, spectacular ears, wagging tails, curious noses and plenty of personalities. And then there were those moments when a dog simply looked at their person.
Those are the photographs I love most. Because sometimes the most beautiful photograph isn’t the one where everyone is perfectly posed. It’s the one where you can see the relationship.
Why Do We Have Photographs With Our Dogs?
I’ve thought about this a lot. Maybe you want a beautiful portrait for your holiday card. Maybe there’s a blank wall in your home that deserves something meaningful. Maybe you’ve always imagined creating a coffee-table book about the life you’ve shared. Maybe you’ve just brought home a puppy and want to remember that impossibly small version of them forever. Maybe your dog is getting older, and you know—somewhere in the back of your mind—that these days are precious. Or maybe your dog is simply your best friend.
For some people, their dog is their constant companion. For others, their dog is their roommate, their adventure partner, their reason to come home—and sometimes, their whole world. That’s enough of a reason.
A photograph doesn’t have to commemorate a special occasion. Sometimes the occasion is simply having this dog, right now, in this chapter of your life.
From A Yappier Hour Portrait To A Pawtraiture Boutique Session
The portraits I created for Yourgi were designed to be beautiful, joyful reminders of an evening spent together. But a full Pawtraiture session is something different. It’s slower. It’s intentional. It’s about discovering the expressions, quirks, character and little details that make your dog unmistakably your dog.
And it’s about creating photographs that don’t disappear into the thousands of images sitting on your phone. Photographs you can print. Photographs you can frame. Photographs you can turn into a book. Photographs you can hold onto.
